Hong Kong Celebrates Bruce Lee’s Life And Legacy

The world knows him as Bruce Lee, the cool and cocksure Chinese-American martial artist who unexpectedly burst into global cinematic consciousness in the early 1970s.

He starred in only five feature films as an adult, and only three of them were released before his early death in Hong Kong at the age of 32.

But fascination with his life, philosophy and legacy remains, crossing the barriers of age and nationality.

Starting on Saturday, Hong Kong will mark the 40th anniversary of Lee’s death by opening a five-year exhibition at the Heritage Museum celebrating the achievements of the city’s biggest star.

“I think that actually the reason we are still taking about Bruce Lee today, and not in a nostalgic way but in a relevant way, is because of the depth of his experience and his philosophy and the authenticity of his life,” said Shannon Lee, his only daughter.

“If he just performed well in a few action films, without all that underneath it, then I don’t think we would continue to be as relevant and inspiring today.”

How Bank Manager Was Murdered In Lagos?

The tranquillity hitherto enjoyed by residents of Salawu Street, along Galilee avenue in Iju area of Lagos was truncated last Wednesday, following sporadic gun shots from unknown gunmen. Gripped by trepidation, residents, some of whom were already on their way to their  work places scampered in different directions for safety, while those who were jolted from sleep hid in their apartments.

When the dust settled, the body of a man riddled with bullets laid still on the ground;and was later identified as Ayokunle Oluwagbenga Ojo, 40, an Assistant Manager and   auditor with the Bank of Industry BOI, Marina, Lagos.

The late Ojo, as gathered, left his family at about 5.45 am that fateful day, with a promise to be home early to attend to some family issues. But little did he envisage  that he will not see his family again to fulfil his promise.

Information gathered by Crime Guard revealed  that few poles  from his building, Ayo( as he was fondly called), stopped,  waiting for a commercial motorcycle to take him to the major road, from where he would board a bus to his destination,  his assailants surfaced from nowhere and snuffed life out of the promising man who was only promoted to his recent position, two months ago.

A commercial motorcyclist who claimed to have witnessed the gruesome murder of the BOI auditor  spoke on condition of anonymity, saying: “At about 5:45am that Wednesday, I was already up for business. I  parked here at this junction (pointing to the spot) when the man walked down from his house and stood  waiting for the a bike. Then, all of a  sudden, some men dressed in black suit approached him and exchanged greetings as if they knew him.

“We later noticed there was an argument between him and the men. They were  close so we could hear what they argued about. The men had demanded for his bag and laptop but he refused, telling them he was not with his lap top. He  asked them why they were demanding  for his things but they  could not give him a  reason.   At that point, one of them pointed a gun at him and told  him that whether he released the bag  to them or not, they would kill him. Then one of them shouted ‘ call Mopol’.

“At this point, some of them started walking towards that area ( points  towards the direction of late  Ayomikun’s ‘s house). Another person started making a call on his phone and immediately, a man came out from nowhere and started shooting into the air, causing all of us to flee from the scene.

He shot the banker at the back of his head, and he fell, while the colleagues took the banker’s bag and mobile phone. It was after they left  that we summoned courage  to return  to the scene. With the aid of a touch light, one of us  summoned courage and turned him up because he laid faced down. Then, someone from the crowd shouted, ‘ ah, it is Ayo!’ at that point, others who ran for cover started coming out.”

Panel Interrogates Amaechi On Rivers Crisis

The investigation panel headed by Deputy Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Operations, Philemon Leha, has questioned Governor Rotimi Amaechi on the festering political crisis in Rivers State.

The panel was said to have visited the governor last week during which he gave his own account of the impasse in the state.

A top police source told Saturday PUNCH on Thursday that Amaechi spoke in camera to the panel members and answered some questions put to him by on the crisis.

“The panel has interrogated a whole lot of people in Port Harcourt and even Amaechi has had an audience with the panel.

“The panel visited Amaechi and he spoke to them. They did that as part of their own investigation; he was asked some questions and he answered them, he met them in camera when the DIG (Leha) was in Port Harcourt,” the source stated.

Investigations revealed that the panel decided to visit the governor in his office to ‘interview’ him on the crisis because Amaechi has constitutional immunity as an incumbent governor and the panel could not summon him like any citizen.

It was gathered that the investigating team was able get useful information during its interaction with the governor, who was said to have been very frank with the panel members.

The number of those that had appeared before the panel was not clear at the time this report was compiled, but it was learnt that the panel planned to quiz all the pro and anti-Amaechi lawmakers in order to have a credible report on the crisis.

Already, the Force Headquarters had summoned the leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Chidi Lloyd; the Aide-De-Camp to the Rivers State Governor, Debeware-Semeikumo, an assistant superintendent of police, and the Chief Security Officer to the Governor, Tony Iwelu for interrogation.

They were to report to the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja for an interview in respect of their roles in the fracas inside the state House of Assembly as seen in the video clips in circulation.

A statement by the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, said that the men were invited to obtain further details that would facilitate a proper investigation into the matter.

It could not be ascertained whether Lloyd and the security personnel had honoured the invitation, but findings indicated that other security details and every individual that was remotely involved in the violence inside the chambers of the Rivers State House of Assembly would be interrogated and summoned to the Force Headquarters as part of the ongoing investigation by the high-powered panel.

Following the refusal of Lloyd to honour its invitation, the Rivers State Police Command had declared him wanted on Wednesday.

The police explained that Lloyd was being investigated for allegedly beating a fellow lawmaker, Michael Chinda with the ‘imported’ mace used in the attempt to remove the speaker last week.

“The Rivers State Police Command has declared wanted one Hon. Chidi Lloyd, a native of Emohua in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, about 37 years of age.

“He is the majority leader of Rivers State House of Assembly. He was involved in a case of conspiracy, attempted murder, wounding and wilful damage on July 9, 2013,” the statement said.

But the embattled lawmaker refuted the claim, saying the police were not being fair to him, as he had informed them of his health conditions, which made it impossible for him to honour the invitation.

Lloyd, through his counsel, Emenike Ebete, said he would challenge the notice on him in court, noting that the police’s action was unfair and would not hold.

He expressed disappointment at the action of the police, which he said made it look as if he was running from the law.

He explained that although he was aware of the police invitation to him, he could not honour it because of his health condition as he was still recuperating in a hospital following injuries he sustained in the fracas.

Commenting on Lloyd’s excuse for not honouring the police invitation, the police spokesman, Mba explained that the house leader would not have been declared wanted if he had reported to the police as expected of him.

“I think it is a very simple thing. Whoever he spoke to should have asked him, ‘why have you not reported to the police?’ Whether it’s a summon or invitation or whether he is declared wanted by the police, it’s more of semantics, the issue is that his attention is requested by the police and since he knows his presence is requested by the police, what stopped him from discharging his responsibility by visiting the police? I just want him to tell Nigerians why he has not made himself available to the police,” he said.

Mba said it was on record that an invitation letter was taken to Lloyd’s house, but he was “curiously not at home; his cook signed for the letter, acknowledged receipt of the letter and ever since then, we have not heard from him.”

Asked whether the anti-Amaechi lawmakers would also be invited by the panel, Mba stated that the investigation would be thorough and exhaustive, adding that police investigations were not riotous exercises where all things take place at the same time.

“Investigations are designed to achieve empirically verifiable results; the fact, that a set of people were invited today does not preclude the invitation of another set of people tomorrow. It is not possible for any serious-minded investigative team or panel to embark on a riotous journey,” he stated.

On whether there was pressure on the police authorities to remove Mbu, the police image-maker said the Force was not under any pressure, noting that the people have freedom under democracy to criticise and express their views.

“Just as people are calling for Mbu’s removal, there are many others describing the CP as the best thing to have happened to Rivers and the best police officer they have ever met,” he said.

Mba, who said he was not competent to comment on the removal or transfer of the CP, noted that the posting and redeployment of CPs were the responsibility of a competent authority, who takes such decisions considering national interest.

On when the panel would submit its report, the DFPRO said the investigation did not have a deadline, insisting that police investigation was not a football match with a fixed duration.

Reacting to the questioning of Amaechi, his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. David Iyofor, said DIG Philemon Leha, who led the police panel that came to the state, met with Amaechi.

Iyofor, however, explained that he could not ascertain the outcome of the meeting since he (Iyofor) was not part of the discussion between his boss and the leader of the panel.

I am aware that the DIG (Leha) met with the governor, but I was not there with them and was not privileged to know what they discussed,” Iyofor said.

Battle not yet over, Chukwu warns Eagles

Christian Chukwu, a former Super Eagles Coach, has urged the home-based Eagles and their handlers not to lose focus as they face Cote d’Ivoire in the return leg of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier in Abidjan.

The Eagles on July 6 in Kaduna thumped their Ivorian counterparts 4-1 and as the preparations for the crucial tie billed for July 27 reached fever pitch, Chuwkwu who captained the Eagles to the 1980 win of the Nations Cup in Lagos, stated that the Ivorians will come back hard into  the game and the Eagles must have to prove that their victory was not a fluke.

“It was an emphatic victory by the home-based Super Eagles over visiting Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in the first match and I believe that they would do better in the return leg.

“I knew the first leg match in Kaduna was a bonus for us, but I never expected a wide goals margin. The result of the first leg marvelled me.

“The team had raised everyone’s hope with the first leg brilliant result and should strive not to dash Nigerians’ hope in the return leg and the subsequent matches,” Chukwu said.

According to him, Chief Coach Stephen Keshi has the right materials. “The Eagles only need  further grooming and training to make the country proud.”

Chukwu called on Nigerians to continue to support the national senior team in their building process because “Rome was not built in a day.”

“I recall that this is the first time we are participating in this competition and I want us to utilise it well and convert all our scoring chances,” he added.

He said he believed and also had confidence in the players.

Chukwu added that the Eagles would make Nigerians proud and qualify for the Championship slated for 2014 in South Africa.

The unnamed woman was a passenger in the car when it hit the back of a truck in southern China’s Guanxi province. The force caused the woman, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt at the time, to fly forward into the windscreen.

Her head broke the glass and she became wedged in the hole. When fire crews arrived on the scene, they had to remove the car’s unconscious driver from the car before they could painstakingly begin freeing the woman.

Firefighters were then able to slowly enlarge the hole in the windscreen around her neck so that it was big enough for the injured woman’s head to be safely freed. Bloodied and dazed, the woman was stretchered away by waiting paramedics and taken to a nearby hospital.

Miraculously, both the woman and her male companion are said to be making a full recovery in hospital.
